Chapter Twenty

- Lyssa -

“I’ve got another surprise for you,” Cody said as we walked into his apartment.

I hadn’t wanted to bring him back to Jazzy’s apartment for fear that she’d be there waiting for us.

He held a bag out for me, and I snatched it, jumping onto the couch with a grin on my face. I pulled out a rectangular box and placed it beside me on the couch. Underneath it was another box, bigger and more cube-shaped.

Cody wrung his hands and stared at me as I pulled the top of the cube box open. Delicate blue tissue paper lay on top, and I folded it to the side to reveal a brand new cap with a signature from the Seahawks’ quarterback.

My hand flew to my mouth. It was so beautiful. The colors weren’t faded like on my brother’s cap, and it even had the round foil sticker still on the bill. My brain stopped working, but my heart was working overtime. I wasn’t sure how to feel or how to react. No one had ever got me a gift like this.

“Did I do something wrong?” Cody asked and peered over my shoulder at the cap.

“Cody, I…” I shook my head. “I can’t take this. This is too much.” Friends didn’t get friends autographed merchandise. Friends didn’t take friends to football games and then spend the entire time with their arm wrapped around you. Did this mean he wanted more? He’d been so clear that this was a no-labels kind of situation.

Cody tugged on the ends of his hair. “Then you probably don’t want to open the next box,” he said with a chuckle, but he looked like he at least half meant it.

I blinked at him, then lifted the lid from the other box because curiosity was a bitch. Even more gently than before, I removed the tissue paper, then stared in disbelief at the folded shirt inside. I ran my fingertips along the hawk on the front, then along each and every signature. I had watched most of them play today.

“You don’t like it? You don’t like it. It’s too much, isn’t it?”

“No, I…” I peered at Cody and gave him a soft smile. “I love it. You got this for me?”

Cody let out a breath he’d been holding. “Yeah. I wanted today to be perfect.”

“Why?” I looked back down at the shirt and pulled it from the box. It was so soft, creased where it had been pressed into the box.

“Why? Does there need to be a reason?”

Did there? Maybe not. Maybe it was enough that he wanted to make me happy. I’d never had that before; no one had ever taken the time to do anything like this for me. I placed the shirt and the cap back in their boxes, put the lids on, and set them to the side.

“You don’t want them?” He deflated like a sad balloon.

“It’s not what I want right now,” I said and pulled him down on the sofa to straddle him.
